Workplace Safety Culture, It's No Small Thing

"Get product out the door, and be safe, too!" ordered Sam, Operations Manager at YoYo Express, at the end of the pre-shift meeting. Justin Time and Vera Careful stood up from their chairs and marched directly to the production floor to start their day. Outside of the conference room, the two forklift operators could see the yoyo machines were wide open, and production operators were scrambling to keep them going full-steam ahead. It was Justin and Vera's job to feed the insatiable appetite of the yoyo machines with raw material like strings, wood and plastic -- the goods that eventually became a yoyo. Read more...

Ask Your Employees if You Have a Strong Safety Program

One of the first questions we ask management when assessing a company or organization's safety program, is "How strong is your overall safety program?".
Invariably the answer is positive. Every company wants to believe that they have a strong approach to safety, and that they are doing the right things, even if the results aren't as good as they would like. A few years ago we started asking a follow -up question, "What would your employees say, if we asked them if you have a strong safety program" ? The reality is that the only assessment that counts is the second one, the opinion of the employees. If they don't believe in the company's safety program, it doesn't make much difference whether management thinks it's strong or not. The workers are the ones who are getting hurt, and whose behavior matters, and it is behavior that leads to injuries. The question that management needs to ask is not if the company's safety program is in perfect compliance, but if that program has a positive impact on the behaviors that lead to avoidable injuries and claims. But this month, take some time to think about employee engagement in your safety program. Safety can be fun – okay, that sounds cheesy – but in all seriousness, it can be. Oftentimes employees view safety as a chore or a boring training session. Why not liven it up and get employees excited and engaged in workplace safety? Read more...

What Is a Health and Safety Poster?

A health and safety poster is a poster that explains a rule or gives advice that is designed to keep people out of harm's way in a public place such as an office, factory, school, government building or rented accommodation. But they also play an important role in demonstrating that the owner of a business or public building is complying with health and safety legislation. This is important for landlords as well.
